The Retablo, or ʻboard behind the altarʼ art form, was originally created in New Mexico in the 1800ʼs, and has been handed down the generations to this day. Lynn Garlick has created this unique two sided icon of St Kateri, the Patron of Environment.
Backside reads: Kateri Tekakwitha, The Environment.
"Saint Kateri, Lily of the Mohawks, pray for us.
May we walk in harmony as one with the natural world, finding joy and peace within it. "
About the Saint:She was born in New York, daughter to a Mohawk chief and an Algonquin mother, in 1656. When she was four, smallpox took her parents and brother and left her with pox marks and bad eyesight. She was adopted by two aunts and an uncle who was chief of the Turtle Clan. She was baptized by the age of 20; after which she was persecuted by her clan and village. She moved to a Native American Christian community in Quebec, Canada. There she led a life of prayer while caring for the sick and the elderly. She took vows of chastity in 1679. She died a year later. It is said that upon her death the pox marks cleared from her face.
