The Retablo, or ʻboard behind the altarʼ art form, was originally created in New Mexico in the 1800ʼs, and has been handed down the generations to this day. Lynn Garlick has created this unique 2 sided icon of San Martin de Porres, Patron of Hairdressers.
Backside Reads: Martin de Porres. Patron saint of Mixed Races, Public Health Workers, Hairdressers, and Children. Born in 1579 of a Spanish Knight and a freed slave born in Lima, Peru. At 15 he became a Dominican Monk. As a child hr dressed the hair of conquistador wives. When he became a Monk he opened up hospitals, hospices, and animal shelters. He could heal with the touch of his hand.
