The Retablo, or ʻboard behind the altarʼ art form, was originally created in New Mexico in the 1800ʼs, and has been handed down the generations to this day. Lynn Garlick has created this unique two sided icon of San Antonio de Padua, Patron of lost items
Backside reads: San Antonio de Padua. Finder of lost objects and worthy husbands. "Holy San Antonio, your love of God and charity for all his creatures made you worthy on earth to possess miraculous powers. I ask of you to whisper my petition into the ear of the infant Jesus whom you so loved. My gratitude will be always yours."
About the Saint: Antonio was born in Portugal in 1195 and died in 1231 at the age of 35. He became a Franciscan monk trained by San Francisco himself. He was a very charismatic preacher. He brought even the biggest sinner into the light. He was said to have radiated a holiness. He performed many miracles. A novice once borrowed his prayer book without asking but returned it after a "fearful apparition" overcame him. This is why San Antonio is Patron of Lost Objects.
