The Retablo, or ʻboard behind the altarʼ art form, was originally created in New Mexico in the 1800ʼs, and has been handed down the generations to this day. Lynn Garlick has created this unique two sided icon of Nuestra Senora de los Dolores.
Backside reads: Nuestra Senora de los Dolores (Our Lady of Sorrows)
Invoked in times of great suffering, for strength and compassion. A version of Mary enduring the many great sorrows, most notably the crucifixion. "Mary, most sorrowful Mother of Christ, pray for us."
About the Saint: This a well known title of Mary, Our Lady of Sorrows, who endured seven sorrows as professed by the Prophet Simeon at the Presentation of our lord.
