The Retablo, or ʻboard behind the altarʼ art form, was originally created in New Mexico in the 1800ʼs, and has been handed down the generations to this day. Lynn Garlick has created this unique two sided icon of St Agnes, Patron of girls.
Backside reads: Saint Agnes, girls, purity, and chastity. Early martyr who refused to marry a Roman son of a governor because she had gevoted her life to God.
"May the innocents of young girls be protected and never betrayed"
About the Saint: Patroness of Girls, Chastity, Purity and Betrothed Couples.
Agnes was a beautiful young girl who had dedicated herself to God. Many men wanted her as their wife but she refused. She even refused the governor's son.
He was enraged and wanted her beheaded. Law did not allow the beheading of a virgin. Many more horrible things were done to her to kill her or change her mind, but she was miraculously protected from much of the harm perpetrated on her. Through all of it she never lost sight of her devotion to God.
